ISLAMABAD, Nov 01 (EPI): Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Burn Centre has made excellent progress in plastic, reconstructive and burn surgery under the leadership of Professor Dr. Abdul Khaliq Malik, Head of the Burn Centre.<\/p>\n
The Centre has an active team of more than 25 doctors, which has performed thousands of operations over the past two years.<\/p>\n
The team has been providing specialised care in burn management, early surgical excision, skin grafting and reconstruction of the face, hands and other affected body parts. The progress achieved reflects the work and experience of the existing team. The priority now is to strengthen its capacity further by providing modern equipment, adequate staffing and additional competent, qualified and experienced plastic, reconstructive and burn surgeons.<\/p>\n
The existing Burn Centre service rules require revision to reflect the current standards of specialist burn care. Relevant postgraduate specialist qualifications, clinical experience and appropriate teaching experience should be incorporated into the eligibility criteria for relevant leadership and faculty positions. The objective is to strengthen the existing team and ensure that its clinical and teaching responsibilities are supported by properly qualified specialists.<\/p>\n
A PC-I worth approximately Rs. 1 billion has been prepared for the upgradation of plastic surgery services. It includes modern medical equipment, improved infrastructure and recruitment of additional doctors and nursing staff.<\/p>\n
International donations from doctors based in the United States and the United Kingdom have included five ventilators, an anaesthesia machine, skin-harvesting instruments and other medical equipment, with a stated value exceeding Rs. 20 million. General (Retd.) Azhar Kiyani,<\/p>\n
Adviser to the Prime Minister, and Professor Tanveer Khaliq, Head of PIMS Hospital, contributed to efforts that helped facilitate this international support.<\/p>\n
The PIMS Board of Governors is requested to recognise the achievements and experience of the existing team and support its further strengthening through the provision of qualified specialists, modern facilities and adequate resources.<\/p>\n
The Government is requested to approve and fund the Rs. 1 billion upgradation PC-I and amend the outdated Burn Centre service rules. The revised rules should reflect the specialist nature of modern burn and reconstructive surgery, with appropriate qualifications in plastic and reconstructive surgery or recognised burn surgery for relevant positions.<\/p>\n
These measures will strengthen the existing team and support the continued development of specialist burn care at PIMS Islamabad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
