Impact of Global Warming on Pakistan’s Weather: Ahsan wahid

ISLAMABAD, Mar 04 (EPI): Global warming has significantly affected Pakistan’s climate, leading to more extreme weather events. Some key impacts include:

1. Rising Temperatures:

Pakistan has experienced record-high temperatures in recent years, with some areas exceeding 50°C (122°F).

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and prolonged, causing heat-related illnesses and deaths.

2. Unpredictable Rainfall & Floods:

The monsoon pattern has changed, bringing intense and unpredictable rains, leading to deadly floods.

The 2022 floods submerged one-third of Pakistan, affecting over 33 million people and causing billions in damage.

3. Glacial Melting & GLOFs:

Pakistan has over 7,000 glaciers, the most outside the polar regions. Due to rising temperatures, they are melting faster, increasing the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

In 2022, Hassanabad Bridge in Gilgit-Baltistan collapsed due to such flooding.

4. Droughts & Water Shortages:

Sindh and Balochistan frequently experience prolonged droughts, affecting agriculture and water supply.

The Indus River, Pakistan’s lifeline, is facing lower water levels due to reduced glacial melt and irregular monsoons.

5. Cyclones & Storms:

Global warming has led to stronger cyclones in the Arabian Sea.

In 2023, Cyclone Biparjoy caused heavy rains and destruction along Pakistan’s coastline.

Solutions to Combat Climate Change in Pakistan

1. Afforestation & Reforestation

Expand projects like the “Billion Tree Tsunami” to increase forest cover and absorb carbon emissions.

Promote urban forests and community tree-planting drives.

2. Water Conservation & Management

Build small and large dams to store excess floodwater for future use.

Introduce modern irrigation techniques like drip irrigation to reduce water wastage in agriculture.

3. Renewable Energy Transition

Shift towards solar, wind, and hydropower to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Encourage solar panel installations in homes and businesses.

4. Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Construct flood-resistant roads, bridges, and housing in vulnerable areas.

Improve early warning systems for floods, cyclones, and heatwaves.

5. Public Awareness & Policy Changes

Implement and enforce strict climate policies to reduce carbon emissions.

Educate farmers and industries about sustainable practices.

6. International Cooperation & Funding

Seek global financial support for climate adaptation projects under COP agreements.

Work with neighboring countries to manage shared water resources efficiently.

By taking immediate action, Pakistan can mitigate the adverse effects of global warming and protect its people, economy, and environment from further climate disasters.
