In this context, the Punjab government’s decision to introduce thermal imaging technology for forest monitoring marks a revolutionary step forward.

With the launch of this initiative, Punjab has become the first province in the country to implement round-the-clock satellite-based thermal monitoring of its forests. The system enables real-time detection of illegal tree cutting, forest fires, and other suspicious activities.

Initially, the program has been implemented in the forests of Murree and Rawalpindi. Through thermal cameras and satellite imaging, the forests are monitored continuously, especially at night when temperature-sensitive sensors detect abnormal changes that may indicate a potential threat.

The government has also integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into the system for data analysis, allowing authorities to respond promptly to any detected irregularities.

Provincial Minister for Forests Maryam Aurangzeb has described this initiative as a “practical advancement toward environmental protection.” According to her, the technology will not only help safeguard forests but also contribute to the growth of agriculture, livestock, and fisheries sectors.

Environmental experts consider this move a milestone in Pakistan’s environmental policy. With the country facing critical challenges such as global warming and rising carbon emissions, innovative and technology-driven solutions like this are essential.

However, it is important that this initiative is not confined to a few regions. The program should be expanded to other forested areas across the province. Moreover, local communities must be engaged through awareness campaigns to foster a collective sense of responsibility for forest conservation.

The use of thermal imaging technology for forest monitoring is indeed a groundbreaking and effective measure. It will play a vital role in protecting natural resources and maintaining ecological balance in the long run.
