Today, the News Broke… The Glaciers are about to burst : By Ahsan Wahid
This morning, as I arrived at the newsroom and glanced at the screen, one headline froze everything around me:
“Glacier burst feared due to rising temperatures in northern regions — PDMA issues high alert.”
This isn’t a movie plot. This is reality — and the bitter truth is, we kept dreaming while the world changed around us.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has sounded the alarm for Chitral, Dir, Swat, and surrounding areas.
They warn that an unusual spike in temperatures could trigger sudden glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
Rescue teams have been mobilized, emergency resources prepared, and tourists advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
But the real question is — why is this happening?
This is not divine punishment.
It is nature’s response — to us.
We cut down forests, poisoned the skies, blocked the rivers, and ripped the lungs of the earth in the name of development.
We hurt nature, and now the wounds are speaking.
The glaciers are melting rapidly, the rivers are roaring, and the mountains are angry.
When we showed no mercy to nature,
how can we expect nature to show mercy to us?
Today’s warning could be tomorrow’s disaster.
If these glaciers burst, it won’t just be water that flows — homes will vanish, lives will be lost, and generations will suffer.
Flickering candles will be snuffed out.
And we’ll be left asking: could we have prevented this?
Yes. We can — but only if we act now.
It’s time to wake up.
Time to show kindness — to ourselves, to our planet, and to our future.
We must take bold, practical steps against global warming.
We must plant trees, enforce environmental policies, reduce emissions, and reconnect our youth with nature.
Please, let this be our moment of realization.
This earth is our mother — and no mother keeps warning forever.
If we don’t change now,
we might not get another chance to.
