Federal Minister for Law & Human Rights chairs First Preparatory meeting of the 14th Pakistan-European Union Joint Commission
ISLAMABAD, Nov 07 (EPI): The 14th session of the Pakistan-European Union Joint Commission is set to take place in Islamabad, from 19th-21st Nov, 2024. The first preparatory meeting of the session was chaired by the Federal Minister for Law & Justice and Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar.
This year’s session focuses on deepening collaboration between Pakistan and the European Union in areas of mutual interest, including democracy, governance, human rights, economic development, and trade.
Established under Article 16 of the Cooperation Agreement between Pakistan and the European Union, the Joint Commission serves as an annual platform for dialogue on important areas of collaboration, with meetings held alternately in Islamabad and Brussels. This year’s session in Islamabad follows the outcomes of the 13th session, held in Brussels, as both parties continue to build on previous achievements.
The Minister, in his opening remarks, reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to fostering a robust and cooperative relationship with the European Union. He emphasized the significance of the Joint Commission as a platform for open dialogue, where both parties can work toward shared goals while addressing key issues that impact their regions.
The meeting chaired by Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, covered a range of topics central to the partnership between Pakistan and the EU. Key areas of discussion included on enhancing democracy, governance, and human rights in Pakistan, emphasizing reforms to boost transparency and strengthen institutions.
Key discussions included the implementation of National Action Plans, protection of journalists, gender equality, women’s and children’s rights, and ensuring protection of minority communities and judicial independence.
The Federal Minister underscored Pakistan’s recent steps toward curbing disinformation, supporting digital rights, and ensuring the protection of vulnerable communities. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advancing these initiatives in line with international standards while respecting the country’s cultural and societal values.
