On International Human Rights Day on 10th Dec, 2024, Honorable Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights of Pakistani citizens abroad.

He announced that the repatriation of prisoners from Malaysia would be prioritized and directed the Federal Minister for Law & Justice and Human Rights to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior to expedite the necessary formalities under the law.

The discussions also included the potential finalization of a Prisoner Transfer Agreement between Pakistan and Malaysia. These efforts are in line with Pakistan’s National Emigration and Welfare Policy, which underscores the protection and welfare of overseas Pakistanis. Recognizing the critical contributions of the diaspora, the government is committed to safeguarding their rights, including those of undocumented workers and prisoners abroad.

The Malaysian delegation reaffirmed their commitment to addressing issues such as limited access to legal aid and communication barriers for prisoners. Both sides agreed on the importance of enhancing support mechanisms for the welfare of incarcerated individuals.

The Ministry of Human Rights & National Commission on Human Rights (NCHR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior, has outlined measures to enhance consular support for Pakistani prisoners in Malaysia. These measures include providing legal representation, translation services, and advocating for fair legal processes.

This initiative highlights the government’s dedication to upholding human rights and fostering stronger bilateral relations, ensuring the dignity and welfare of its citizens.
